A SWAT officer loves a suspected murderess. What could possibly go wrong?

Ten years ago, Bexley Kane and Max Remington were high-school sweethearts hoping to get married and start their future together. But a stalker, and his death, ended their hopes and dreams and sent Bex fleeing town under suspicion of murder.

Now she’s back, and the past has caught up to her. But will SWAT officer Max Remington learn to trust and love her again? Or will Bex’s secrets destroy them both?

In 2014, award winning book TENNESSEE TAKEDOWN introduced readers to the sexy SWAT team of Destiny, Tennessee. This year readers get to experience more stories about the wonderful men and women in the TENNESSEE SWAT series, beginning with MOUNTAIN WITNESS. The newest release is out now, SECRET STALKER. And there will be more stories after that.

Below is an excerpt from SECRET STALKER. Enjoy!

CHAPTER ONE

The whispers started thirty seconds after Bexley Kane walked down aisle three in the Piggly Wiggly on Magnolia Street. Not that there was a Piggly Wiggly on any other street in the tiny town of Destiny, Tennessee. With a population the size of a large high school in other parts of the state, this town could only support one grocery store. And one movie theater. And one Waffle House. But, oddly enough, there were four Starbucks. Too bad not one of them was anywhere close to Magnolia Street. Bex sure could use a venti caramel macchiato right now.

Head high, shoulders back, she began filling her cart as quickly as possible while pretending not to notice the other shoppers talking behind their hands as she passed. But, come on, did they really believe that she didn’t know they were gossiping about her? She could well imagine what they were saying.

Is that who I think it is? What’s it been, ten years? Why is she back in town?

You didn’t hear? Her mama done passed away. I heard she died of a broken heart, on account of her daughter didn’t visit even once after she got run out of town.

You think Chief Thornton will arrest her this time?

Is there a statute of limitations on murder?

“Miss Kane, nice to see you today.” Mr. Dawson gave Bex a genuine, welcoming smile from behind the deli counter. “I was hoping I’d see your lovely face at least one more time before you left Destiny. You here for lunch? We’ve got a brand-new batch of pickled pigs’ feet.” He proudly thumped a large jar on top of the display case that looked like a science experiment gone horribly wrong.

Bex very nearly lost her breakfast. She averted her gaze from the nauseating sight and smiled at one of the few people in Destiny who hadn’t treated her like a pariah in the week that she’d been back.

“Hello, Mr. Dawson. I called in an order for some lunch meats and grilled chicken. Could you see whether it’s ready, please?”

“Gladys must have taken that order. I’ll check the cooler. Won’t take but a minute.” He opened the massive walk-in refrigerator behind him and headed inside.

Bex checked her grocery list. The only thing left to get was mustard, one of several things she’d forgotten the first time she’d been in the store. After today’s shopping trip, she should have enough to tide her over for several more days, until she finished taking care of all of the details of her mother’s estate. Then she could hop into her car and leave Destiny in the dust. Again. And this time, she’d never come back.

If she remembered correctly, Mr. Dawson kept the condiments across the aisle from the meat case. Since little else had changed in this town, she doubted that had, either. She turned around—and locked gazes with the one person she’d hoped to avoid.

Max Remington.

His golden-brown eyes stared at her in shock for all of three seconds. Then they filled with anger. His jaw clamped tight and, without a word, he circled around her and headed to the sandwich counter at the other end of the deli.

Gladys miraculously appeared as if from thin air, eager to take Max’s order. Bex couldn’t help noticing that he was all smiles and yes, ma’ams, no, ma’ams when speaking to the older woman. But he couldn’t even spare a hello for his former lover.

His curt dismissal shouldn’t hurt. After all, she was the one who’d left him. But he’d been her first love. And she’d built him up in her mind over the years as her handsome hero, dreaming of what life could have been, should have been, if she’d said yes that night.

And if Bobby Caldwell hadn’t died.

Birth of a Series! The Sexy SWAT team of Destiny, Tennessee!

Mountain Witness - Lena Diaz

In 2014, TENNESSEE TAKEDOWN introduced readers to the fictional town of Destiny, Tennessee and the sexy, funny SWAT team of five alpha men and one kick-butt woman. Readers loved it. TT won the prestigious Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence. And to this day, it’s still my best-selling Harlequin Intrigue.

But why am I talking about a book that released three years ago?

Because, in response to reader emails asking for more of the sexy heroes of the Destiny, Tennessee SWAT team, I’ve created a new Tennessee SWAT series. And the first book, taking up where TT left off, is MOUNTAIN WITNESS!

MOUNTAIN WITNESS – Print releases January 17. eBook releases February 1st!

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Ibooks | Kobo

A woman in hiding and a man on a mission in the Smoky Mountains

Detective and part-time SWAT officer, Chris Downing, doesn’t know much about his neighbor. In the rural town of Destiny, Tennessee, Julie Webb lives a life of seclusion, rarely even offering a smile or wave. Only when Chris hears her frantic screams one night does he gain a glimpse into the life of a woman in hiding, and in saving her life, he is forced to kill her attacker. But Julie’s troubles are only beginning to unravel. When Chris learns the identity of Julie’s attacker, questions of trust are raised and suspicions run high. Together they will uncover the motives of a killer…and the undeniable attraction between them.

TennesseeTakedown

MOUNTAIN WITNESS begins one year after TT ended. All of the SWAT characters from TT make appearances in MW. And readers get a very special glimpse into the lives of the hero and heroine from TT and what has happened to them since that book ended.

I had a blast writing this book, and have three more to go to finish out the series–including SECRET STALKER, which comes out next month!

secret-stalker Lena DiazSo far the feedback from readers about MOUNTAIN WITNESS has been wonderful. I’m looking forward to hearing from readers of TENNESSEE TAKEDOWN as well, and how they’re receiving the continuation of that world in these new books. I hope everyone loves the fabulous alpha-heroes, and heroines, of Destiny, Tennessee!

To celebrate the release of MOUNTAIN WITNESS, I’m giving away a print copy of both MOUNTAIN WITNESS and SECRET STALKER to a random commenter on this post. So, tell me readers, what makes a SWAT hero sexy? What makes any hero sexy?

The randomly drawn winner of the two print books will be announced in the comments of THIS post on Tuesday, January 24th, so be sure to check back to see if you won.

A Series Finale, Saying Goodbye to Mystic Glades

Hostage Negotiation Cover

HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION – Pre-order now for August 23, 2016 (paperback) or September 1, 2016 (eBook).

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Ibooks | Kobo

It’s with mixed feelings that I announce the upcoming end of the MARSHLAND JUSTICE mini-series. On August 23rd, the fourth and final book, HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION, makes its way into the world.  While I’m extremely excited for readers to experience this incredibly emotional story, I’m sad to see my time in the town of Mystic Glades come to an end. It’s been a blast, one of the quirkiest, most unique series that I’ve written. And readers have been equally enthusiastic. The first book, MISSING IN THE GLADES, won the Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence in mystery and suspense. The second book, ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS, was a finalist in the Bookseller’s Best Award. I’m crossing my fingers that the last two books, DEEP COVER DETECTIVE and HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION, will also garner some award recognition.

Here’s a full description of the story in HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION…

Many women went missing outside Mystic Glades. She escaped.

When he took the job, Zack Scott heard about the horrors waiting in the swamp. So when Kaylee Brighton dashed into the road like the devil was on her tail, the new police chief gave her a safe place to recover. Imprisoned for months, Kaylee could lead Zack to her captor. Though Zack swore to protect her, only Kaylee knew the darkness that awaited them if she returned. She couldn’t begin to understand what drove Zack, but she knew the importance of having him by her side. Because it wasn’t enough for Kaylee to have escaped. Now it was time to take back her life.

I hope you’ll give the MARSHLAND JUSTICE mini-series a try, including this last installment, HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION. You can see the whole series, and all of my books, highlighted on the BOOKS page of my website.

Author Lena Diaz Just Had Her Baby!

Amazon | Barnes & Noble
ArrestingDevelopmentsAnd the baby’s name is… ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS! Lena’s 12th published romantic suspense novel is out in paperback now. The ebook version releases on January 1st. This is the second of four books in the Marshland Justice series, featuring a quirky, lawless, fictional town called Mystic Glades, hidden deep in the Everglades off Alligator Alley.

Here’s what RT Book Reviews said about this book: “Diaz is on a streak with her latest. With a host of suspects and hiding places, Arresting Developments is packed with action, suspense and mystery–not to mention a charming hero.”

And here’s a full description of the story…

A mysterious beauty had nursed him back to health–and attracted the attention of some very bad men…

Somewhere over the Everglades, the airplane’s engine failed and Dex Lassiter plummeted into the swamp’s murky depths. Amber Callahan didn’t expect to find any survivors in the wreckage, but Dex was about as tough as they came. And too smart not to dig into why a woman like her had run away to settle in remote Mystic Glades. Or why a killer circled their every move. As floodwaters rose, deputizing Dex was just what this lawless small town needed. Because escape wasn’t possible. And the only thing Dex did better than starting things was defending them.

I hope you’ll give ARRESTING DEVELOPMENTS a try. If you do, please drop me a note and let me know what you think of it!

A New Book is Born! MISSING IN THE GLADES, by Lena Diaz

Amazon | Barnes & Noble
MissingInTheGladesCoverMMPIt’s release day! My eleventh published novel, MISSING IN THE GLADES (An RT BookReviews Magazine TOP PICK! ), is out today in paperback. The ebook version releases on December 1st. This book ushers in a four-book series about a quirky, lawless, fictional town called Mystic Glades, hidden deep in the Everglades off Alligator Alley.

Here’s what RT said about this book: “Diaz gets high marks for character and relationship development. Top-notch suspense, action and close-call, edge-of-your-seat moments earn this well-written story a Top Pick.”

And here’s a full description of the story…

He was looking for a missing person. What he found was a beautiful stranger.

Looking for a fresh start, detective Jake Young headed south on a case that could help launch his PI business. He knew no amount of work would make him forget his tortured past, but maybe Faye Star could help. Caught up in Jake’s missing persons case, the distracting Faye was hiding a secret he was begging to find out. Expertly guiding him through the swamps, Jake’s job grew more complicated when someone started taking shots at the free-spirited beauty. As much as she protested she could take care of herself, Jake stepped in, refusing to admit how desperately he needed someone to save. Especially since he’d never be able to save himself…

I hope you’ll give MISSING IN THE GLADES a try. If you do, please drop me a note and let me know what you think of it!

Fun Fact: Jake, the hero of MISSING IN THE GLADES, was a secondary character in a previous book of mine, EXPLOSIVE ATTRACTION.

Meet the Real Angi Morgan

Think You Know Harlequin Intrigue Author, Angi Morgan? Think Again.

angimorganauthor

I met Angi Morgan in 2010. She and I were both Romance Writers of America Golden Heart© finalists in different categories–which is why we’re still friends–she won, I didn’t. Okay, I would have still been her friend even if we’d been competing against each other. Why? Because once you meet Angi Morgan, there’s no way to NOT like her. I’m pretty sure that she doesn’t know what the word stranger even means. And she is one of the most welcoming, genuinely caring people I have ever met. She’s also a devoted animal lover who is a foster mom for dog rescue.dogs

Angi with Meg Cabot

As an author, Angi selflessly promotes her fellow authors, whether she gets any promotion benefit out of it or not. Why? Because she cares about people, cares about her friends, and wants them all to do well. As a person, she goes out of her way to ensure that everyone is doing okay. When I saw her in Texas at conference last year, she took one look at me and decided I was dehydrated and took me up to her room and made me drink a bottle of water. She was right. I felt much better after that bottle of water. Angi’s like that – always looking out for others. And perhaps her most admirable quality is that she can make anyone smile. The gift of laughter, of making others feel happier just by walking into the room, is Angi’s superpower.

But don’t just take my word for it. Take theirs

Diana Belchase: Angi presented me with my Golden Heart. I think she was just as nervous as I was — and so sweet. She had been a prior winner and had a two book contract and I kept thinking and hoping that would be me, too. Sigh, alas and alack it isn’t, but I remember that night with Angi, as she fumbled for her glasses, posed with me for the official photo, and gave me a great big hug, vividly.

Liz and Angi GH

Lizbeth Selvig: I met Angi Morgan in 2010 when she and I both finaled in RWA’s Golden Heart contest and then we each won our respective categories. We didn’t become fast friends right away, but we sure bonded–we know how to make each other laugh! Two years later I joined the group blog Angi started with several of our other GH sisters (Get Lost in a Story) and she also invited me to join a private chat room she’d started for a handful of authors who wanted a place to get together online and write. Since then I can honestly say Angi has never stopped encouraging me to push forward through the times when writing seems like a slog or when I’m at that point in a book when I’m sure I’ve lost any talent I ever had. I hope I do the same for her–because otherwise I’m getting all the perks of our friendship! Over the past four years I’ve come to realize that Angi encourages everyone she knows–she’s a wonderful friend. She also cares passionately about promoting her friends’ books, her books, and all romance reads in general. She’s one author who’s also an amazingly cool person!

Robin Perini: You can’t choose your relatives, right? Many a family reunion makes that truth all too real. Angi and I, though, that’s another story.

How can you be cousins, but not cousins? Well, when my uncle married Angie’s aunt, we became sort of cousins…kind of. Cousin-by-marriage? I guess that’s a title. Angi and I didn’t know each other. Our families tried to connect us, and of course, me being shy (and there is that thing about oh my gosh, I have to meet a pseudo-relative who also writes…can this be any more lame?). I reluctantly agreed to look her up.

We ended up standing in line practically next to each other during registration for a writing conference. I won’t even mention what I was saying—it was probably something like, “I have to find this chick whose aunt married my uncle and I don’t even know who she is….and there Angi was! LOL

Angi_Robin_GH

We became acquaintances first, like you do sometimes with people you see only at a conference every other year or so. it’s an obligation, in a way. Though I will admit, every time we were able to get together, we talked our heads off. Then over time we discovered the truth: our paths are eerily similar and we have an amazing connection. How else does it happen that:

1) We both write romantic suspense
2) We both have the same agent (purely by accident, by the way)
3) We both won Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Award in the same category one year apart
4) We both sold our first Harlequin Intrigue to the same editor …

There’s even more, but the best part is, that initial meeting fell away into memories. I’m blessed that my pseudo-relative became so much more. Not to mention that Angi shared one of the best writing tools that I use. Sprints. That’s another story, of course. The truth is you may not be able to choose your relatives, but you can definitely choose your friends…and sometimes not-exactly-cousins are the best gifts ever!

And now, for a brief interview…

Lena: When did you start writing for publication?
Angi: Oooo…trick question. I thought everything I wrote would be published. LOL I began learning the business in 1999. Ten years later when all the kiddos graduated, I concentrated on getting my story in front of the right people. And sold. So I began writing for publishers in 2010.

Lena: Any info you want to share about your Intrigue call story?
Angi: Other than it was awesome? And I was by myself? When my husband got home from traveling he took me to THE MELTING POT. He didn’t tell me he’d made a reservation OR that he’d told the staff I’d just sold. Flowers were delivered to the table and with them…a charm that represented his favorite thing in the book. Yes, my husband reads my books and actually enjoys them. It was a magical evening.

Lena: People you’ve met along the way who have been an inspiration?
Angi: Sharon Mignery, Patricia Vermiere, Tara Waldie, Amy Atwell, Robin Perini, Jan Schliesman, my Golden Heart class of 2010, my Intrigue sisters. I gain inspiration from so many people, it’s hard to name them all. But the daily instant messages I receive from fans…keep me going with my writing.

Lastly, I just want to share an amazing PARTIAL list of awards and finals for Angi’s books…

  • Twice ranked on the top 25 of Publisher’s Weekly Trade paperback listangi-morgan-thecattleman
  • Romantic Times Magazine Top Pick
  • Romantic Times First Series Book Final

  • November 2010 Romantic Times Best Series First Book Nominee
  • July 2010 RWA Golden Heart® WINNER
  • Great Expectations romantic suspense WINNER
  • Romancing the Tome series WINNER
  • Barclay Sterling long contemporary WINNER

And did I mention dog rescue? Here’s some information about the work that Angi does.

Angi: People ask how I can foster pups and give them away. I won’t tell you it’s easy. But it is by far one of the best things I’ve done. Seeing a discarded dog find a home and become a part of a family brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. There just isn’t anything like the unconditional love of a pet. They’re there for you all the time…no matter what. I foster because there’s a family that needs the dog I’m training to love them.

What else does Angi do as a volunteer?

Angi:  I served as a volunteer and on volunteer organization boards of numerous school organizations for 20 years (PTA, athletics, boosters, band, orchestra, choir, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts). Girls Fastpitch Softball for 22 years. Local writing organizations the past 14. We began volunteering as a foster family for Labrador retrievers in 2013.

What about volunteering for RWA?

Angi: National level: Regional Director, served on numerous committees. I was also the Literacy for Life book signing chair from 2004 through 2007. Local Level: President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Newsletter, Contest (just about every year) and lots and lots of other volunteer stuff

I’m extremely grateful that I met Angi all those years ago. And I’m honored and humbled to call her friend.

Reality or Fiction? For Angi Morgan’s West Texas Watchmen, it’s Both.

(Due to an emergency in Lena’s family, I am helping both Angi and Lena out today by hosting their blog. After all, a girl’s gotta take care of her Golden Heart sisters!)

Thanks for having me today, Lena. I love to be Kissed & Thrilled. Oh wait, I guess I’m the one… Okay awkward moment gone. It’s been a while since Lena hosted me. Huge coincidence that the book we spoke about–PROTECTING THEIR CHILD–was the one that inspired my new series.

West Texas Watchmen on white

The West Texas Watchmen series is set in the small town of Marfa about 20 miles across the mountains from Mexico. It’s a vast area with little cell reception. Perfect for smuggling — either in reality or fiction. Marfa may be small, but Presidio County is vast so my sheriff has a lot of land to cover. There’s also a lot of sky. With the McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains, there’s also very little light on the horizon.

The Sheriff (West Texas Watchmen) Trailer

All of my Intrigues are based in real Texas towns. I love taking off for a road trip to get research photos. In my stories, I keep my driving times accurate, the terrain or city areas true, and take the liberty of changing the names of businesses. Somehow that anchors me in my stories and I can focus on other things. Do you like fictional towns or real locales? Honestly, when a writer gets things wrong about the Dallas area… Well, I’m very disappointed.

I also love to learn new things that help my characters become real. Last summer it was surf lingo. For the Sheriff, my heroine is working on her PhD in astronomy. I had a fan once tell me that she loves reading my stories because she always learns something–either about my characters’ occupations or Texas. So I thought it would be fun to include that type of scene for you today.

Here’s a teaser from THE SHERIFF

Angi Morgan-TheSheriff 3D“The commander’s gone to the scene. He said to stay put until he returned. Looks like you’re stuck with me, Sheriff Morrison.”

“Acting sheriff. Why don’t you call me Pete.” Was he insulted? Or too dang excited he didn’t need to dart off to talk shop? Excited.

“I need to show you something.”

“I don’t think that’s appropriate.”

She threw back her head, laughing. He barely heard it as he admired the bend of her neck. “Silly,” she said. “Do you have any gel?”

“Huh?” Silly wasn’t the word filtering through his mind.

“Styling gel.”

“I used it already.”

“Not enough to do anything.” She reached around him, brushing his arm as she squeezed goo into her hands.

Stunned into silence? Choking on his words? Cat got his tongue? He didn’t know which, and if she asked, he couldn’t hear her. He was focused on her hands rubbing together and then her arms lifting to reach his head.

“Get shorter.” She tapped the inside of his bare feet wider apart, leaving enough room between them to breathe without touching.

“So, what is your favorite star?” he asked, closing his eyes and enjoying her fingers lightly massaging his scalp as she liberally put gel on every strand. He couldn’t look.

“Wolf 359. Isn’t that an awesome name for a star?” She took the tube a second time. “Just a bit more. Your hair’s really thick and wavy.”

He was dang lucky he’d put his pants on quickly. If he hadn’t…

“See?”

All he could see was the roundness of each breast under the thin layer of hospital garb.

“All you have to do is squeeze some on your hands and rub it around like this. Then it should stay looking deliberately messed up all day.” She wiped her hands on his towel and admired her handiwork. “That will look much better later when it’s dry.”

She twisted one last piece of hair and placed her hands on his shoulders. It seemed like the most natural gesture in his memory for his fingers to move and span either side of her waist. Drawing her closer to him was just as easy.

They were forehead to forehead. Her slow, warm exhale smelled sweet like the cola she’d insisted on before the officer had arrived. She’d called it her wake-up drink of choice. He, on the other hand, loved coffee and lots of it.

Concentrate on the job. What job? All he had to do was hang around here, keep her in sight till she was someone else’s problem. Maybe even escort her home.

“I’m not a rule breaker, Andrea.”

“Then why are your hands still around me?”

Kissing her was destined as soon as she’d told him they’d never get along. “What’s about to happen probably shouldn’t. But you won’t find me apologizing for it later.”

“You better not, Pete. Bad first kissers don’t get a second chance.”

He liked her. A lot. Too much. Too fast.

He leaned his lips to touch hers for the first time. Soft and wet, they parted just enough to encourage him. His hands spread up her back, noticing the firm muscles.

There wasn’t anything between them now except a thin layer of cotton. He stopped himself from getting the shirt out of his way. This was their first kiss but sure didn’t feel like it.

Their lips slid together, teasing, seeming to know their way without conscious effort. A perfect fit? Practiced. Confident.

He wanted his hands to wander but forced them to stay put. Andrea’s arms encircled his neck, shifting her body next to his. Her tennis shoes snuggled next to his size-thirteen feet. That one layer kept him both sane and drove him crazy at the same time.

He wanted it off. Wanted her bare skin under his flesh. Wanted to forget exactly where they were and remember everything much too late.

The attraction turned to mutual pure hunger and he liked her even more.

 ~ ~ ~ ~

Andrea was a very fun character to write. A little of my daughter and her friends. A lot of who I’d like to be. Writing about this area of Texas makes me yearn to find locales that have no “light pollution.” We recently took a trip to southwest Texas and stretched out in the back of the truck under a gazillion stars. There’s nothing like it. I can’t recommend the experience enough. And that might just be why Andrea loves the area as well.
