The Next Jack Reacher Movie – If Not Tom Cruise, Then Who?

I’ve read several of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child in the hopes that I’d love them. After all, his books have received incredible acclaim and there are like a gazillion in the series–which is crack for a reader to have that many books to gobble up. Alas, after reading several, I haven’t quite fallen in love.

Then came Tom Cruise.imdbmoviecover

In 2012, he brought Jack Reacher to the big screen in the movie not so cleverly titled, JACK REACHER. I really enjoyed it, even though I was skeptical going in. After all, the book hero Jack Reacher is a huge guy. Literally. I think he’s six-feet-six or something. And Tom Cruise, well, isn’t. But just like Tom Cruise won me over starring in INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, even though his body type was completely different than the Lestat vampire in Anne Rice’s books, it worked. Completely. Of course it didn’t hurt that Brad Pitt was a co-star. But I digress.

Now, Tom cruise is starring in the second Jack Reacher movie, NEVER GO BACK. And I, for one, am looking forward to it. (To see the movie trailer on IMDB, click the picture.)

Yes, Tom Cruise is Scientology-Jump-On-Oprah’s-Couch-Crazy, but he’s also HOT. In my humble opinion. And even though I wouldn’t want to meet him in person, on screen he’s exceptional. There are few actors as good as him, again, in my opinion.

So, are you looking forward to the newest Jack Reacher movie? Or are you a die-hard Lee Child fan and believe that Tom ruins the character of Jack since they are about a foot apart in height? And if not Tom Cruise, then who would you want to see starring in the movies?

Just for fun, I’ll randomly pick a commenter to win a Kindle copy of HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION, my current release (details about the book appear below). I’ll announce the winner in the comments of this post, no later than Tuesday, September 20.

Though Zack swore to protect her, only Kaylee knew the darkness that awaited them if she returned. She couldn’t begin to understand what drove Zack, but she knew the importance of having him by her side. Because it wasn’t enough for Kaylee to have escaped. Now it was time to take back her life.

I hope you’ll give my MARSHLAND JUSTICE mini-series a try. You can see the whole series, and all of my books, highlighted on the BOOKS page of my website.

  1. How funny! I’m exactly the opposite-
I’ve read a few Lee Child novels too, became enough of a fan that I went to his book signing at our local indie bookstore in Houston. (Picture 200 fan inside a cramped hoarder’s paradise that fits 20 comfortably!) He was a riot- and you can’t beat that British accent.

I stopped reading him because T.C. RUINED it for me. 🙂
It’s why I prefer books covers where I don’t see the guy’s face or the guy is so drop dead you pick up the book for that reason. The cover model/actor has to BE the guy in my imagination. And Lee Child goes into a LOT of description of how physically intimidating Reacher is- hell, he is still cramped behind the wheel of a car with the seat all the way back.

So…seeing T.C., who is a great actor, but knowing his ego is 3 times the size of his tiny body and his audacity to think he can buy the rights and play his pretend role of being Jack Reacher….ugh! Haven’t picked up a novel since. Cuz T..C. is who I see now, and the whole intimidating factor that MAKES Reacher who he is-is out the window. 😦

    Enjoy the movie though! 😉

  2. I love the Jack Reacher novels, but have to admit I haven’t seen the movie yet. I’m always afraid the movies are going to be so bad that I’ll never want to read another book with that character again. But now I’ll have to watch it!

Ever since Top Gun, I have always loved Tom Cruise. And yes, I even thought he played Lestat well even though I had my doubts at the time.

And congrats on your newest release, Lena. I have it on my TBR and know it’s going to be wonderful. 🙂

  3. I’m a big fan of Lee’s books and have read them all and continue to read them. Tom Cruise hasn’t ruined the character for me because I can still block his image when I read, and he really doesn’t ruin the movies for me…the screenplay writers do because they don’t follow the book.

  4. What a fun post, Lena! I love the book-movie mashup review 🙂 I enjoy the Reacher books, but I didn’t go to the Reacher movie because, like Sarah, I had trouble reconciling the Reacher described by Child with the reality of TC.

  5. I admit that I am almost totally clueless about Jack Reacher. I’ve never read any of the books so I had no idea what he looked like. When I saw the movie trailer, I thought it looked good. However, I haven’t seen the movie yet. So I think I’ll just try one of the books so I don’t spoil my imagination by trying to make the two mesh.

    • Jack Reacher in the books is a giant of a man who uses his size to intimidate. It’s a huge part of the books, which is why having a short, small guy play him in the movies is baffling.

  6. I haven’t read the books, but anything Tom Cruise stars in works for me. He’s got enormous…box office appeal (what did you think I was going to say? 🙂 )

  7. What a fun post! You echo most of my own feelings, Lena. Excellent review. And your new book is fantastic! Enjoying it so much.

  8. Congrats on another amazing release, Lena! And I’d say you can digress about Brad Pitt all you like! I’ve been a Cruise fan since Risky Business and I try not to let his personal life interfere with my crush. After all, I’ve never met him so who am I to judge?

    • I can hear it now…da, da, da, da, da, da, da….and totally see him sliding across that wooden floor, those shades, that shirt, those tighten whiteys. LOL. Thanks, Carey. And thanks for the kind words about my latest.
