2014 RITA® nominee: Erica Spindler

Welcome 2014 RITA® romantic suspense nominee, Erica Spindler!

Her nominated novel is: JUSTICE FOR SARA

HER FIRST LINE: Katherine McCall stood at the broken front gate and stared at the words that had been spray-painted in black across the yellow clapboard siding.

When seventeen-year-old Katherine McCall arrived home one night to find her beloved sister, Sara, brutally murdered, her whole life changed in the blink of an eye.  Kat was named the prime suspect and, on a string of circumstantial evidence, charged and tried. While the jury found her innocent, not everyone else agreed, and her only choice was to go into hiding. But she carried a dark secret with her, one that made her worry she might actually have had something to do with Sara’s death…

Now, ten years later, Kat still haunted by her sister’s unsolved murder, receives a chilling, anonymous letter that’s impossible to ignore: “What about justice for Sara?” What about justice for Sara? And for herself? Kat realizes that going back to Liberty, Louisiana, is the only way to move forward–and to catch Sara’s killer.

But the town she’s come back to is hardly different from the one she left. The secrets and suspicions still run deep. Kat has an ally in Detective Luke Tanner, son of the former Liberty police chief, but he may be her only one. With plenty of enemies, no one to trust and a killer determined to keep a dark secret buried, Kat must decide if justice is worth fighting—and dying—for.

  1. Having recently sampled work by Karen Rose, Carey Baldwin and Rachel Grant, I think I’m developing a real taste for romantic suspense. I think that a good actor can greatly enhance those spine chilling experiences with audio, just as Hitchcock did it with visuals, so availability as audio books is a big plus for me.

Delighted to see that ‘Justice for Sarah’ is available in audio and I’m tempted to buy. Another audio book ‘Don’t Look Back’ appears to be the same story but with a different narrator?

Carey Baldwin in a recent post estimated that the romance proportion of her novels was around 30-40%. For me the romance element is very important, lifting this genre above the abundant raw thrillers now available, by tempering the horror with an element of hope.

Erica can you give a similar estimate for romance content? If sufficient I’m buying the audio as soon as my next credits arrive! 🙂

    • Thanks for your question, Quantum. Romance is hugely important for me too. In fact the tension that unfolds into romance is what captivates me. Looking forward to Erica’s answer.

    • Thanks for the question! That’s tough one, because for me the two are so tightly entwined they’re inseparable. But if I have to be pinned down–LOL–I’d say 30%
BTW, yes, DON’T LOOK BACK is the same novel, just the UK edition.

    • Thanks so much, Quantum!

    • Thank you, Quantum! Great question too!

Q, I really enjoyed this one and thought it’s romance to suspense ratio was very similar to that of CONFESSION by Carey Baldwin. I think you’ll like it.

      • Thanks Manda! A thumbs up from you settles it … I’m going to buy.
I read Karen Rose’s ‘You Can’t Hide’ after you recommended it and was reading it well into the night. 🙂

  2. This book sounds great! I can’t wait to read it!

  3. Congratulations, Erica! Justice for Sara sounds amazing and I look forward to cheering you on in San Antonio!

  4. Putting this on my TBR pile!

  5. Congrats on finaling in the RITA, Erica! So thrilling, and this blurb sounds great! Good luck!

  6. Erica, given all the times you have received a RITA nomination, was this call kind of ‘ho hum, thank you” or does it never lose it’s thrill?

    • Never loses it’s thrill. In fact, I’m extra excited by this book’s nomination. Because I stepped out creatively writing it and getting great response is affirmation of what I was feeling in my gut.

  7. … and my already-epic TBR queue of doom gets even more epic. So many books, so little time!

    Congrats on the RITA nom!

    • You crack me up, Cris. As I said to Deborah, we are hosting each RITA RS nominee M-Th this week…you ARE doomed. 😉

  8. Congrats!! I love romantic suspense. You know there is a HEA, but you get excitementalong the way!! Thanks for the chance to win.

  9. Erica spindler is one of my favorite authors in contemporary women’s fiction. Her adeptness in creating suspense-laden,fast-paced narratives surely makes the readers engrossed in a roller coaster ride of emotions.Having read a dozen of her books did not only entertain me but made me more informed about the world around us.
One of my favorite Spindler books is Forbidden Fruit. There was never a dull moment reading her masterpieces, and definitely hard to put her books down.So love her characters like Kitt lundgren and the Killian sisters.
You never fail to amaze me erica, congratulations. For me,you are one of the superstars of the free world whom i really look up to.Keep on writing,Justice for Sara(though i don’t have it yet, having a hard time looking for a copy in the Philippines)is certifiably another humdinger of a book!

  10. Sigh… I promised myself no more books until I had read my entire kindle pile. What does it say about me that I blatantly lied to myself? I LOVE Erica’s novels…. so I CAN’T pass up Justice for Sara! Congratulations on the nomination.

Crap… I’m a liar and it looks like the rest of the week’s guests are going to keep “my pants on fire”.

    • That’s why we love commenters like you, Julie. It means we’re targeting great guests! (We’re like the crack-cocaine site for readers with huge TBR piles.)

    • Thanks, Julie. LOL BTW, my TBR pile is towering as well. I guess books are my crack. And chocolate, that’s crack too! 🙂

  11. Sarah, thank you for introducing us to the RS Rita finalists this week. And congrats again on your awesome Golden Heart RS final. Erica, welcome to Kiss and Thrill and cheers for being a Rita finalist again! Love your opening line because it immediately pulls the reader in, makes them want to find out the answer to the questions you raise (where is the heroine, why graffiti, is she in danger).

  12. Erica, Thanks so much for joining us today at Kiss and Thrill. We’re honored to have you here. Great job Sarah! Congratulations to you, Erica, on your Rita final. it’s so important to have excellent books represent our genre. We’ll be cheering you and the other RS finalists on in San Antonio!

  13. Erica, welcome to Kiss and Thrill and huge congrats on the RITA nomination! I’ve been a fan of yours for a long time and have several of your books on my keeper shelf (which was culled greatly during the last two moves).

I remember first finding you in the mystery section at a Waldenbooks in Hawaii, when I first started writing RS and was eager to find authors who have deeply developed suspense plots with a romance intertwined. Your books fit that bill perfectly and I quickly devoured your backlist.

Sadly, Waldenbooks is long gone, and I now do most of my book shopping online, so I’m curious, are your books still shelved primarily in the mystery section? Do you find that more of your audience comes from mystery readers or romance?

    • Hi Rachel! Ever since I went single title my books have been shelved all over the place–mystery, romance, and fiction, depending on the bookseller. My covers sometimes muddied the water as well. Not quite “romance” Not quite “Thriller/mystery.” Several of my books strayed from romance as I followed my muse to some darker territory, before I swung back. Who do I have more of: romance readers or mystery readers? Not sure, but I know the great majority are women. XO

  14. Sarah, you’re right. We are like the crack-cocaine for readers with huge TBR piles. Including me. 😉 Justice For Sara sounds awesome. Good luck in the RITAs, Erica!

  15. Erica, congratulations on your RITA nomination! That first line has me hurrying over to Amazon so I can find out what was spray-painted on Kat McCall’s fence.

Sarah, thank you for inviting all the RITA finalists to K&T. You know how I love opening lines (especially ones involving spray-paint)!

  16. Hmm, I suspect there’s a story to go along with that comment. 🙂

  17. Well, Erica, We SO appreciate the time you took out of your hectic schedule to spend the day with us. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you better, and wish you the VERY best of luck in July!

  18. Welll, Erica, you’ve been writing for quite awhile and have a lot of fans…so where have I been that I haven’t read anything by you yet? I love romantic suspense, or just plain suspense/mysteries. I have to admit though, I was an historical romance mainliner for a long time and only two years ago started reading romantic suspense, so maybe I have been “living in the dark.” 🙂 But no longer. I’m happy that Kiss and Thrill had a post about you today so that I could catch it and learn more about you. Thanks! Now I gotta go check out Amazon . . . jfh2690@gmail.com
