Stepping Inside the Actors Studio with Julie Ann Walker

Julie Ann Walker

Julie Ann Walker

This week I am thrilled to welcome Julie Ann Walker back to Kiss and Thrill! Julie’s latest book, THRILL RIDE, released April 2nd and to celebrate this eagerly awaited sequel, I decided to put Julie in the hot seat, James Lipton-style. Lipton (photo below courtesy of Wikimedia Commons) is the host of the Bravo TV series Inside the Actors Studio, and he always wraps up the interview by asking the subject the same ten questions.

James Lipton by David Shankbone

James Lipton by David Shankbone

Since this is Julie, and I know she won’t mind, I’m going to sit back and enjoy a cocktail while James does all the work.

1.) What is your favorite word?

It’s too dirty. I can’t share it here. LOL! Just kidding. I love the word “flibbertigibbet.” I mean, come on! It sounds made up, completely nonsensical, like something a drunk man in a bar would come up and say to woman. “Ya wanna head back to m’place and play with my flibbertigibbet?” *hiccup*

2.) What is your least favorite word?

Now, you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I loathe, despise, and abhor the word “slurp.” It’s like the words slim, slug, and burp got together and had a threesome and the child born of the unholy union was slurp. Slurp is supposed to denote both an action and a sound effect, and both things are repugnant. :-/

3.) What turns you on?

Oooh, that’s easy. A good wine. Give me a nice bottle of wine, a warm night with a soft breeze, and I’m a sure thing. (Believe me when I say my husband considers this information when planning vacations. *wink, wink*)

4.) What turns you off?

Without a doubt, that would be feet. Feet are usually ugly, sometimes smelly, and oftentimes either obscenely dry or disgustingly sweaty. Feet have always grossed me out. And some of that might stem from having my older sister shove her big toe in my mouth if she caught me sticking my tongue out at her, or if she caught be yawning, or sneezing… She was a sadistic child, and now I’m scarred. For life.

5.) What sound or noise do you love?

I should say it’s the smooth, guttural rumble of a V-twin engine, right? Considering badass custom motorcyclists are kind of my shtick? And I do adore that sound. It’s visceral and exciting. But more than anything else I love the soft resonance of waves shushing against the shoreline. Perhaps it’s because I grew up on a lake and currently live on one, but something about that noise is so soothing, so comforting… feels like home.

6.) What sound or noise do you hate?

The alarm clock. Of course, this could have something to do with the fact that I’m not, repeat not, a morning person. The instant that meep, meep, meep wakes me out of a deep sleep I want to cut someone. Seriously… cut them.

7.) What is your favorite curse word?

Hands down, that would be “asshat.” The word is so concise and at the same time so definitive, summing up a person who has their head stuck up their butt in just two syllables. I’m a sucker for brevity when it’s wielded with precision. LOL! Perhaps it’s the writer in me!

8.) What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I think it would be fun to be a foreign correspondent for a big news agency. I imagine myself exposing corrupt politicians, interviewing leaders of state, slinking across unfriendly borders in the middle of the night to get the next big scoop… Then again, like anything else, the idea of foreign correspondence is probably far more romantic than the reality.

9.) What profession would you not like to do?

Anything that has to do with garbage or human waste. I have a weak stomach. And smells can get to me quicker than anything else. The aroma of chicken skin left in the trashcan for a couple of days has been known to make me to blow chunks into the kitchen sink. Just sayin’…

10.) If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

Whew! Didn’t expect to see you here! 😉

Today Julie wants our readers to answer question 3: What turns you on? We will randomly choose from the comments a winner who will receive a signed copy of THRILL RIDE!

He’s Gone Rogue…

Ex-navy SEAL Rock Babineaux is as Cajun as they come—spicy, sexy, and more than a bit wicked. But would he actually betray his country? Even his best friends on the special-ops Black Knights team aren’t sure they can trust him. Now the target of a massive manhunt, Rock knows the only way to protect the team—especially his partner, Vanessa—is to run…

She Won’t Back Down…

Rock might think he can outmaneuver them all, but he hasn’t counted on how stubborn Vanessa Cordero can be. And she refuses to cut him loose. Sure, her partner has his secrets, but there’s no one in the world she’d rather have by her side in a tight spot. Which is good because she and Rock are about to get very tight…

  1. Rachel and Julie Ann, what a fun interview. Loved the ten questions. So, Julie Ann, I’m guessing you aren’t a fan of Slurpees at 7-11 food stores! Too funny that you have such strong feelings about the word slurp. Hmmm…to answer your question about turn ons, I’d have to say coming home to a clean house courtesy of my hubby does warm things to my heart. He doesn’t do housework very often, but when he does it’s so wonderful. Sounds silly, but I lead such a busy life that when he pitches in to help share the burdens it can smooth over anything else going on and makes the world seem right again. Thanks for being here today. Good luck with your latest release. You can’t go wrong with a hot Cajun named Rock!

  2. I loved James Lipton’s questions! I used to watch that show all the time.

Julie, you had me laughing with “play with my flibbertygibbit” line.

As to your question, I think the ocean is a big turn on for me. It’s both a place of relaxation and utter inspiration.

I lived in Virginia Beach for a number of years. I would often go down by the shore after a stressful day and just let my worries roll out on the waves.

And then of course there were the disproportionate number of hot guys playing volley ball. Always bonus in the inspiration department. 🙂

  3. What a wonderful interview! And I can’t wait to read this book–it sounds amazing.
As for the question, I have to say that being on vacation turns me on. I don’t care where it is (but prefer a tropical beach), as long as I don’t have to worry about kids, cooking or cleaning I’m happy and relaxed. It’s probably why I do my best writing while on vacation. 🙂

    • Sharon, that’s one of my favorite things about writers – we love what we do so much, we take vacations so we can work!

    • Oh, I WISH that were the case for me. The hubs and I are usually “adventure” vacationists. So, I’m usually more stressed *on* vacation than off! LOL! In fact, I go in today to get my second round of shots: rabies, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, etc. in preparation for our Southeast Asia trip next month. #sorearm

      • Wow, Julie! That sounds amazing! I would love to travel to Southeast Asia. (But sorry to hear about the sore arm!)

I take writing vacations – weekends away with hubby or a retreat with other writers. When I’m with my kids on vacation I’m not allowed to work – but then we do things like going whitewater rafting, so bringing the laptop wouldn’t be a good idea anyway. 🙂

        • I totally understand about having to leave the laptop at home when vacationing with the kiddos. As writers, we have the tendency to work anytime there’s an opportunity which, with technology being what it is, there’s ALWAYS an opportunity. Am I right?

  4. Julie Ann: I love a good foot rub or back rub. You can let your imagination take it from there. 😉

Thanks for being with us today. I devoured your first two books. Can’t wait to get my hands on three and four!

  5. Wasn’t Meg Ryan a flibbertigibbet in Joe Vs. the Volcano? Do I win a prize just for obscure pop culture references? Of course, it it wasn’t Meg Ryan, just delete this post before anyone see it, kay?
What turns me on? The remote control, when I can find it? Bwahaha. I crack myself up. Sorry.

  6. We are thrilled to have you back at K&T, Julie!

Loved your answers to the quiz! I’m with you on question #8 – my first major in college was journalism.

What turns me on? Water – whether it’s a hot bath, or a walk on the beach, water is sensual to my ears and my skin.

  7. Hey, wasn’t Meg Ryan a flibbertigibbet in Joe vs. the Volcano?

What turns me on? Getting obscure pop culture references?

  8. What turns me on: Hot guys on hot bikes….well lucky for me you’ve got another book in this AWESOME series out. I’m like Gwen, I’ve still got to Rev it Up first and then I’m going for a Thrill Ride!

I’m also turned on by a man who thinks I’m fascinating even when I’m being a flibbertigibbet. I’m thinking Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan in the movie, IQ. Okay, now I’m free associating to someone else’s post. Time to get back to the day job.

We love having you Julie! Great fun, Rachel!

  9. Awesome interview, such great questions (and really great answers!) I gotta say, your answer is pretty dead on for me as well…a warm evening, a soft breeze, a nice bottle of wine, some relaxed conversation…oh yeah. Your husband is a smart man 😉

  10. great interview! When you put it that way about slurp it has me retink that word LOL! I have to say I never got into the motorcycle until I read your books now I want to take lesson and learn to ride one!

  11. Jacquie Biggar

loved the interview, I agree asshat kind of says it all hey? lol.. My big turn on would have to be smell, I love the smell of my hubby when he comes out of the shower, HOT!!

  12. Love Actor’s Studio. Watched a rerun with Judy Dench the other day and I think I’m in love.
As for what turns me on, it’s got to be humor. You make me laugh and you can pretty much loosen me up enough to do anything with me.
That and ripped forearms (think Matt Damon). Sigh…

  13. My favorite word is kerfuffle. It’s fun to say it. I hate the word tumescent. I think it should be banned from all written material. Turn ons: a clever wit

  14. What turns me on? A man who exudes self confidence without being conceited

  15. great interview

  16. I have no idea what my avatar decided to be the little green monster for a while. But I’m digging the haircut. 😉

  17. Great Interview! I’m about half-way through Thrill Ride and can say I’m in love with Rock! In fact, part of the reason is what turns me on … accents. I am a sucker for anyone with an accent and I can hear Rock in my head with that deep Cajun drawl. **shiver**

  18. I think I’m most turned on when my husband goes out of his way to be considerate & thoughtful :-).

    LOVE this series!!

    Jenn McElroy

  19. Love the interview! I love the quiet of a front porch right before a storm!

  20. Very nice interview

  21. Hi Julie! I can’t wait to read Thrill Ride.

I am totally with you on the feet thing. Ick! As for what turns me on…that’s easy…John Deere tractors. They do it for me every time!

  22. Poetry by Pablo Neruda (warning: read with fire extinguisher on hand). Here’s a sample…

“I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair.
Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets.
Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day
I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps.”

  23. raonaidluckwell

So love the term “asshat”. So making me giggle here. I finally snatched some reading time and yes I am reading Thrill Ride. I reward myself after writing…

    Raonaid at gmail dot com

  24. I have a new favorite word-Fidiot. Won’t say were I got it from but sometimes the need to yell it out loud makes me feel goood. Also, a quiet evening and a cold glass of wine with a guy that knows how to smile…Is there anything better?

  25. Love when my man tells me I look HOTT! best turn on ever….

  26. I LOVED this interview and Hahahaha Asshat is one Of my favorite curse words along with DoucheNozzle!!!! lol Tattoos are a turn on along with a nice mixed drink!!!!!

  27. I agree, feet can be gross. But I’m all for a good foot rub as long as they are clean.

    • I’m a fan of a good pedicure – but I could never, ever give one. 🙂

    • LOL! Well, not to give away spoilers or anything, but in a recent sex scene I wrote, the hero kisses the arches of the heroine’s feet. It grossed me out while I was writing it, but I’ve been told by a girlfriend – who will remained unnamed – that it’s very erotic. And I like to give my fans what they like, even if it involves foot kissing. *shiver*

  28. What turns me on: confidence. My hubby has a ‘I got this’ attitude that is amazing!

  29. I love the term Batshit Crazy!!!

  30. What turns me on the most…winning free stuff!

  31. feeling NAUGHTY – I always wanted to be a man sandwich – as in me & 2 guys 🙂

  32. Turn one include chocolate to share with my hubby, a beach and a hot stone massage. Looking forward to reading Thrill Ride. Love the series! Thanks for the contest.

  33. Some cuddle time with the hubs or a back rub will usually set the mood right up for me 😉

  34. My answer would be a warm fire place on cold night with a good book, snuggled under a blanket with my husband holding my close on the couch.

  35. So sorry to be this late. Hello everyone and wow, what a showing! (James Lipton would be so pleased!)

Turn on,,,,hmmm. Watching a well-muscled man do something that requires said muscles. Fixing a car, construction (Diet Pepsi commercial), or even working out. Must be MOIST, but not dripping-sweaty.

Why yes, I am happily married. Why do you ask? 🙂
Thrilled to have you with us, Julie. Off to buy your yummy book!

  36. I thought her favorite word was interesting I always found flibbertigibbet was a strange but cute word that you could use to replace anything. I also have a weak stomach so I can understand, I wanted to be a doctor until I realized I could stand the sight of blood and guts. Your answers were awesome, funny, entertaining and interesting I enjoyed it!

  37. What a great interview. I love your Knight books and look forward to reading your next book.
HMM, the answer is a great romance like the Knights. Then…. 🙂

  38. Ginger Robertson

    Julie Ann
Your answers were too funny! And, I learned a little more about you.
    Continue best wishes,

  39. I can’t wait to read this!

My husband turns me in still! 😉

  40. Great Q&A!! Hope you had fun. Take care! Love your books!!!

  41. Love the Q & A session. My fav. word is also very dirty! Also, most people think I’m nuts because I’m female and love this word. Your least fav. word cracks me up. I suppose saying it sounds rather disgusting anyway, so I could go with it. lol
My least fav. word is Dump. *shivers* I despise that word.

    Thanks for the fun!

Thrill us with your wit...
